Senior Community Moves
A Move Built Around the New Room
NuWay Relocation moves older adults from a house or apartment into assisted living, memory care, and independent living communities across the Triangle. We measure what will fit, pack what is going, move it, and set up the new room so it feels familiar. Family can stay involved in person or by video, and we are licensed by the NC Utilities Commission (NCUC C-3093).
This is one part of our senior moving services. Most of these moves are small but exacting. About two-thirds of the senior community moves we have booked were the size of a one- or two-bedroom apartment. The hard part is usually not the load. It is choosing what comes from a house full of belongings, and fitting it into a room where every piece has to earn its place.
A note on terms: in North Carolina, many assisted living communities are licensed as adult care homes, and a home that advertises memory care must hold a license for a special care unit (G.S. 131D-4.6). For the move, the practical question is the same either way: ask the community what the room allows and when furniture can come in. If you ever have questions about resident rights, the regional long-term care ombudsman serving Wake, Durham, and Orange counties is at 800-310-9777.

Why NuWay
Why Families and Community Staff Call NuWay
Senior living communities around the Triangle referred about 130 moves to us in the past 12 months. Their staff see how our crews work in their hallways, and they tell families.
We Plan From the Move-In Date
Tell us the date the community gave you and we work backward from it, including sorting days, packing, and any storage in between.
One Person to Call
Ashley Watson, our Director of Project Management, earned her nursing degree at ECU. She or a member of her team is your family’s contact from the first walkthrough to the final check.
Careful in Shared Hallways
Community hallways stay busy with residents and staff during a move. We pad the furniture and keep the route clear while we work.
Family Out of Town Can Join
A son or daughter in another state can join the walkthrough by video and get updates by phone, text, or email on move day.
Written Estimates
Every move gets a written estimate before it is scheduled. Moves of 50 miles or less are billed hourly under the NCUC tariff, and longer moves are priced by weight and distance.
Veteran-Owned and Family-Run
Co-owner Robert Moriarty is a Navy veteran, and the people who scope your parent’s move are the people accountable for running it.
What We Handle
What a Community Move Includes
Book the whole move or just the parts your family cannot get to. Here is what our crews handle.
Measuring the New Room
Bring us the community’s floor plan and our space planning works out which pieces fit before packing starts, so nothing makes the trip without a place to go.
Choosing What Comes
Our downsizing help sorts room by room into keep, give to family, donate, recycle, and discard, and sets aside anything that needs a family decision.
Packing and Labeling
Careful wrapping and boxes labeled by contents, so the things your parent reaches for every day are easy to find. See packing and unpacking.
Room Setup
We assemble the bed, place the furniture, hang the TV, and take the boxes and paper with us.
Storage While Family Decides
Pieces nobody is ready to part with can go into climate-controlled storage instead of crowding a small room.
Clearing the Old Home
After the move, we can clear what is left, with donation and recycling drop-offs, so the house is ready to list.
Plan Your Parent's Move With Us
Tell us the community and the move-in date. We will set up a free walkthrough, in person or by video, and send a written estimate.
How It Works
How a Move Into a Community Works
Six steps, whether your parent is leaving a house or an apartment.
Share the Date and Floor Plan
Send us the move-in date, the floor plan, and any move-in details from the community.
Walkthrough and Estimate
We walk the current home in person or by video, then send a written estimate covering crew size, truck, materials, and timing.
Sort and Pack
Sorting and packing happen ahead of move day, at your parent’s pace, with family decisions set aside.
Load the Truck
Furniture is padded and wrapped, floors and doorways are protected, and the truck is loaded so nothing shifts.
Through the Community
We follow the community’s move-in process, keep hallways clear, and bring everything to the new room.
Set Up the Room
Furniture placed, TV hung, boxes gone, and a final check with your family before the crew leaves.

Moves We Handle
Community Moves We See Most
Every family’s situation is different. These are the moves we are asked about most often.
Assisted Living
Usually a move from a long-time house into one or two rooms. Most of the planning goes into choosing what fits.
Memory Care
Ask the care team what to bring and whether to set up before your parent arrives. The Alzheimer’s Association helpline is open 24/7 at 800-272-3900.
Independent Living
More space and often a full kitchen, so more pieces can come. We still measure first.
Changing Levels of Care
Moving from independent living to assisted living or memory care, on the same campus or to a new one.
When Your Parent Stays Elsewhere
After a hospital or rehab stay, your parent may not be home for the move. Family can direct it by phone or video.
Couples Moving Together
Two people’s belongings and one new floor plan. We help sort out what each person needs close at hand.
Assisted Living and Memory Care Move FAQs
What goes into the cost of moving a parent into assisted living?
Your estimate is built around your parent’s move: crew size, hours, how much sorting and packing your family wants, and the walk from the truck to the door. It covers the careful part too, including padded and wrapped furniture, protected floors and doorways, and setup at the new home. You get it in writing before anything is scheduled, listing the crew, the services, and what is included, so your family knows exactly what it is getting.
How soon can you move my parent?
Call as soon as you have a move-in date. For the senior community moves we have booked, the typical gap between first contact and move day was about two weeks, and about one in four happened within a week. We fit in short-notice moves whenever our calendar allows.
Can you set up the room before my parent arrives?
Yes, if the community allows it and your family prefers it. We can place the furniture, hang the TV, make the room usable, and take the boxes with us. Some families bring their parent in after the room is ready, and others want them there to choose where things go.
Does the community require anything from the movers?
Each community sets its own move-in process. Ask the move-in coordinator about elevator times, where the truck can park, and whether a certificate of insurance is required, then share the details with us and we will plan the day around them.
Do you provide care on move day?
No. We are movers, not care providers. Please plan for a family member or caregiver to stay with your parent on move day, and talk with the community’s care team about the best timing.
